3 keys for starting as an entrepreneur

feedback, teams and motivation

Entrepreneurs have questions everyday. You want to know if the timing is right or if you are pursuing the right idea. You want to know how to get started, you are worried if you'll find customers or if you will find help when you need it. I want to answer some of those questions today.

Lets start by going back to the basics

Running surveys

product research is important and there is a right way to do it. Run surveys for your business and get early feedback from people who truly care about what you do and what you are building. Your focus here is not to gather 5 star reviews and high ratings, go after genuine feedbacks that will give you insights into how you can offer a better service. You don't have to overthink the process - start with facebook groups, create simple questionnaires you can share with your contacts via Whatsapp or your favourite chat app. Remember, your goal is to get honest feedback.

Your team

Up next is your team. Here is a simple hack people ignore: build with your friends who are on the same mission as you are. Working with your friends will make work easy. You want to be careful though not to hire just about any friend only because they are unemployed or available - hire only those who have the right skill set and have bought into the same vision you are pursuing. If you've done business long enough, you'll always have one or two wrong hires. Don't be scared to let people go. If you discover a new hire isn't a right fit for your organisation, let them go immediately.

Motivation

Lastly I want to talk about motivation. What's your motivation dear entrepreneur? Most people go into business strongly motivated by the need to earn billions, travel around the world and be able to afford all the world's luxuries. While this is a good motivation and might work, motivation often dries up and so does energy. Entrepreneurs who have been consistent and built successful businesses are often motivated by something more than money. For the most part, successful entrepreneurs are driven by the need to be able to meet up with life's demands or to be in a better position to offer help to friends and loved ones. Your motivation should be strong enough to keep you awake at night and powerful enough to kick you out of bed in the morning.

Let's take a moment to revisit the results from the survey we spoke about in step 1. Filter the results of the survey responses and find out what exactly solves the pain for users: this is your pain killer. Build your business around it. People will pay 10 times over for pain killers than they will for vitamins, built to prevent sicknesses and boost your immune system. People want their pains to go away immediately.

Dear entrepreneur, once you get these basics right, go all out and start selling.
