5 productivity hacks to gain unfair advantage in entrepreneurship
Copy and paste this productivity framework immediately
In an unfair world of disadvantages, how can we level the playing ground? If you were born in a developed country, you already have an advantage over someone born in a third grade world country. How do you improve your chances at greatness? A thread of 5 productivity hacks:
1. Where you live matters
Where you live determines the quality of your day to day life, your immediate network and it shapes your world view. Yes, the internet significantly increases your reach beyond your immediate environment but in reality, it only improves your odds. Choose wisely. If you live in a town where opportunities and the quality of the relationships you can get are limited, consider moving. Have you ever wondered why people open shops in really expensive areas? Yes they pay more rent and the direct correlation is that they can charge higher for their services but this probably means they are just breaking even and not taking in millions. So what makes it worth their while? It’s the connections they get - the very possibility that just one introduction to somebody of worth could dramatically upgrade their life! What’s the probability you’ll meet with Elon Musk? It’s almost zero if you are taking taxis in the park. Your chances of meeting him increases when you fly economy. Your chances are even greater if you consistently fly first class. As you spend more to improve your immediate environment and expose yourself to people of influence, so does your ability to get high paying opportunities. Now assume you happened to be on the same flight sitting right beside Elon, what conversation would you have?
2. What you do matters
People think the most important ingredient for success is hard work. They are only half right; more important is what you work on. Ask yourself; is the total addressable market large? Are you solving a pressing need? Are you impacting/changing lives with your solution? If your answer is yes, yes and yes, you’re on to something big. You earn what you earn because of what you are, Tiger Woods earns what he earns because of what he does. Stephen Spielberg earns what he earns because of what he has others doing. Bill Gates earns what he earns because of what he has the whole world doing. Now, back to you, what are you working on? Is it subsistent or is it potentially something everyone can participate in? Solve big problems. Society will reward you for solving their problems at scale.
3. Who you network with
This is a strategy that I’ve seen work in people and I’ve tested it myself. You can network online but this point addresses networking in your immediate physical environment. In your local area, identify the 10 wealthiest people and make them your friends. Do the same in your church and in your school. Connect with the 10 top minds, be their friends. This will gain you recommendations in your career, extended network to more influential people, steady inflow of high paying jobs if you’re an entrepreneur and opportunity to reset your mindset.
4. Choose your weapon right
Your mobile device can do a lot, today the gap in innovation is wide but surprisingly, the tools used to innovate and build internet companies are readily available - a phone/laptop and an internet connection is all you need to start a world changing business. We live in amazing times where if you press a laptop right, you can become a billionaire. Take advantage of it.
5. Improve on life skills
Speaking, writing and reading - these are life skills which were poorly taught in school. It’s your responsibility to grow in these skills deliberately. When you open your mouth, you tell the world who you are and why you are valuable. Writing is a skill that will never phase out; seek to improve daily at it. As for reading, the smartest and wealthiest people have given you a blueprint to replicate their success and they put it in books. Read up!
Bonus point:
Own the basics - Your phone, your toothbrush and your charger. Without these, you are unlikely to build a company.
